Why Hike In Albania?

7 Best Hiking Trails in Albania

#1. Valbona to Theth

Valbona to Theth

This hike totally deserves the top spot on the list. It’s one of the most popular trails for hiking in Albania, allowing you to see the breathtaking beauty of the spectacular Accursed Mountains, otherwise known as the Albanian Alps.

Both Valbona and Theth are National Parks in Albania, so imagine the scenery you’ll get to witness. The hike is a bit challenging, but it’s properly marked, so it’s harder to get lost. It’s about 30 kilometers long and has an elevation of 2,213 meters.

The average duration of the hike is about 7-8 hours. If you’re walking at a slow pace, though, you might get to 10 hours of hiking. It starts in the beautiful village of Valbona and ends in Theth. However, you can also start your hike in Theth and end it in Valbona; it’s up to you.

#4. Mount Korab

The highest peak of Albania, Mount Korab, stands at an elevation of 2,764 meters on the border of Albania and North Macedonia. The mountain offers incredible scenery and one of the best hiking trails in the country.

It’s an 8-kilometer route, lasting about 4 hours. There are two ways to take the hike. There’s a steeper and shorter route and a more gradual and longer one.

Whichever path you choose to take, you are guaranteed some amazing views of Albania. When you’re at the top, it’ll feel like having the whole country at your fingertips. It’s not that strenuous of a hike, and anyone with a little experience can easily get through it.

#5. Dajti Mountains

Bordering the capital of Tirana, The Dajti Mountains offer amazing hiking trails just outside the city. After a wonderful ride in the cable cars of the Dajti Express, you can start your hike to Maja e Tujanit.

It’s a 5-kilometer trail, which takes about two hours and a half. The path is marked, so you won’t have any trouble. It’s a good hike to do in the summer months too because it offers shade and a natural escape from high temperatures.

When you reach the peak of the mountain, breathtaking views of the city will lie in front of you. Make sure to take plenty of water and a pair of good walking shoes with you.

#6. Tomorr Mountain

Experience the beauty of Berat and Tomorr Mountain by embarking on this hike. It will take you through some beautiful forests and rocky terrain. The peak stands at 2,416 meters, and the terrain is mostly steep.

The hike will start from the upper part of Ujanik village and go up to the summit, which offers some of the best views of the mountain chains nearby. It’s a moderate-difficulty hike but still requires some hiking experience.

You’ll have the chance to see some beautiful alpine meadows and amazing flora and fauna. Make sure to stock up on water and sunscreen, and have a good pair of hiking shoes.

#7. Lake of Tirana

This trail is pretty popular among Albanians, as it’s located in the heart of the capital, in the Grand Park of Tirana. It’s one of the easiest hikes in Albania because it’s mostly flat terrain and has many facilities along the trail.

There are small water fountains at the start and countless cafes and refreshment options along the lake. It’s a lovely hike to take on a quiet summer evening or even in the morning when it’s a little cooler.

It only takes about an hour and a half to walk through the whole park, and you can do a full circle.

#1. Essentials to have with you

#2. Safety Precautions

For each and every adventure, safety comes first, so make sure to take these safety precautions into consideration:

  • Let someone know. Tell someone else where you’re going and when you plan to be back, just in case.

  • Always stick together. If you’re traveling in groups, don’t split from your group; it’s easier to find your way back if you’re not alone.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Always pay close attention to the trail and terrain you’re walking on so you can easily avoid hazards like slipping on rocks or falling branches.

  • Stick to the marked trail. Always take the properly marked trails. If you’re taking your own route, make sure to leave signs behind you.
