Porto Palermo Castle is a significant monument located near the village of Himarё in southern Albania. It was built in the 19th century and was used by Ali Pashe Tepelena as a defensive outpost.

The History Behind Porto Palermo Castle

Most sources say that the castle was built in the 19th century by Ali Pashe Tepelena, one of Albania’s most powerful conquerors. Legend says that the engineers who helped build the castle were killed right after the structure was completed for unknown reasons.

Nowadays, it’s debatable whether Ali Pasha built Porto Palermo Castle or not. There are speculations that the Venetians might have built it due to its triangular shape, just like the Venetian Castle at Butrint.

Porto Palermo beach and its bay used to be important harbors in ancient times, having to protect the Himara. It was named “Panormos” by the Greeks and later renamed Porto Palermo in the Byzantine Period.

How to Get to Porto Palermo Castle?

To get to Porto Palermo Castle, you can drive a car or take a bus.

Since it’s in a remote location, Porto Palermo Castle is best accessed by car. It’s about an hour's drive from Saranda to Porto Palermo, while the towns of Himara and Qeparo are just a few minutes away.

The road isn’t confusing or anything, and it’s in pretty good condition.

If you don’t own a car, you can take a bus from Tirana to Saranda, which costs about €12, and then catch a minibus to drop you off in Porto Palermo. However, the buses are a bit too far apart, so you might have to wait a while.

Ksamil can definitely be considered an Albanian “must-see”. It’s close to Himarё and located on the coast as well. It’s known for its breathtaking turquoise beaches and soft sand, welcoming countless tourists every year.

Butrint National Park is one of the most significant parks in Albania, and it contains an archeological site of an ancient city that is also on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It’s surrounded by wetlands and is a pretty interesting area to explore.
