Saranda, one of the most popular cities on the Albanian Riviera, is known for its unique attractions and serene beaches. Once you visit, there are lots of things to do in Saranda. From amazing historical sites to scenic boat trips, there’s something for everyone.

This city is definitely not to be missed. It can offer you a very bright and lively atmosphere, with its beautiful beaches, streets filled with adventurous tourists, and restaurants bringing to your table some mouthwatering dishes.

The climate is also very favorable, so let us take you through the most important information on it, as well as all the things to do in Sarande!

Where is Saranda Located?

Saranda is located in southern Albania, on an open sea gulf in the Ionian Sea. It has about 30,000 inhabitants and is the largest city in the south. Thanks to its amazing climate, Saranda is packed with tourists almost all year, but the best time for some amazing holidays in Albania would be between the months of May and September.

The name “Saranda” actually comes from the monastery named Agioi Saranda, which means “Forty Saints.” After being changed a few times under Ottoman and Italian rule, Saranda finally got its name for good when Albania gained independence in 1912.

How to Get to Saranda?

The most convenient way to get to Saranda is by car. This way, you can even make stops along the way and explore the places much better. It’s about a 4-hour drive from Tirana, but the fantastic scenery makes it all worth it.

There are a few sharp twists and turns on the road, so be careful about those.

If you don’t have a car, just hop on a bus to Saranda. There are many bus lines offering trips from various cities in Albania to Saranda, but also directly from abroad, from countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, or Turkey.

You can also easily book a taxi for a more comfortable but more expensive option. You can choose MerrTaxi, SpeedTaxi, and many others.

A very popular way for tourists to come to Saranda is also by ferry boat from the beautiful island of Corfu. You can get to your destination in just 30 minutes while enjoying the amazing coastal views.

There are up to 10 daily ferry departures during the summer, so it’s hard to miss one!
