Exploring the Soul of the Mediterranean Kep Merli

Marsel Kalemi • Dec 29, 2023

Located in southern Albania, between Ksamil and Saranda, Kep Merli is one of the most prominent tourist destinations during the summer. It’s an absolute paradise, filled with sunshine, crystal water, ancient history, and cultural heritage.

The village of Kep Merli is the perfect getaway, providing a very
inviting atmosphere with its small and friendly artisanal shops, florists, and unique restaurants.

It’s been discovered that a rare species of bird, the
Blackbird Cape, inhabited the shrubs of the area centuries ago. These shrubs are said to be the mythical plants of Aphrodite and are seen as a symbol of well-being and beauty. Because of this, the locals named the area “Blackbird Forest”.

How To Get to Kep Merli

Kep Merli is located on a peninsula near Saranda and Ksamil, and there are numerous ways to get there, so let us walk you through each one:

  • 1. By Plane

Firstly, you can come to Kep Merli by plane. It’s probably the easiest and most comfortable way, although it can get a bit expensive, depending on when you’re visiting. The National airport is located in the capital of Albania, Tirana, and there are numerous direct flights available from Turkey, England, Germany, and Italy.

However, if you’re coming from the U.S., you’ll have to catch a layover flight. That means you’re going to have to change planes in one country and then get on the plane to Albania.

  • #2. By Ferry

From the harbor of Corfu, you can find regular ferry services that take you to Saranda for a 1-hour trip. You can also take a speed boat, which takes only 25 minutes. Once you’re in Saranda, you can get to Kep Merli by a 30-minute drive.

  • #3. By Car

You can also choose to go by car if you’re in the mood for a road trip. The main roads to Albania are in good condition and well-maintained, and there are plenty of road signs, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost.

During your trip, you’ll also get to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the country, including the Albanian Riviera coastline and the mighty mountains.

  • #4. By Bus

If you don’t have your own car and don’t want to catch a plane, you can also get to Kep Merli by bus. There are many lines available from countries like Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, and Germany. All you have to do is book your seat in advance, as the buses might be full and you may have difficulties finding a seat at the last minute.

The ticket prices vary depending on the country.
